Home is where the hazards are #TGIF

You'd think that after three days housebound there wouldn't be much to tell. Haha. Just take this morning for example.

Momma Boyd gave me some little freezer pots to make Small Fry's lunches and dinners, but when I was in Brussels I saw how Momma Mark also uses silicon cup-cake baking trays to freeze larger portions. I decided to do the same and first up was one nice and juicy melon. That needed a bit of water to get the blender going, but it eventually poured into 3 of the 6 cups. I then decided to have a go with some spinach in order to fill the remaining cups. A huge whole packet of spinach doesn't amount to much once steamed and puréed in a blender, but you do need to add water to help the blending process. So I ended up with a second fairly runny mixture. I picked up the silicone baking tray and about then realised my schoolboy error. Momma Mark had used puréed cauliflower...which doesn't go marching off into its neighbour's cupcake mould as soon as you bend the silicone. As I lifted it to the freezer, I watched two moulds become a pretty swirl of a melon-spinach mix, and therefore didn't pay proper attention as I manoeuvred it towards the open freezer. It caught on the edge, I took my hand away to steady the base and the green and slimy contents of the last two cake moulds splattered all the way down the fridge and onto the floor, with the splash back hitting the kitchen door and the walls.

As I was clearing it up, Small Fry woke up and I went through to pick him up to change his nappy. I placed him down and took off his trousers and socks, undid his vest and opened his nappy. Bit of a wail from him, but at least no sprinkler from him today. I dumped the nappy in the nappy bin while Small Fry wiggled away, and as I turned back I saw his face contort into that look that you know instantly is pain, even if you've never seen it before. The look you see on a child's face when they've just trapped their hand in a door or sliced off their big toe or something. Mouth wide open, eyes screwed shut and a deafening silent breathless scream. I snatched SF up immediately and was surprised that the scream never actually arrived, and when he turned to look at me, he was fine again. So I looked down at the changing mat and about half way down was a bright yellow tac. Must've fallen off the wall where it was securing coloured drawings.

As I patted him on the back and spoke soothing words, my fingers brushed against something warm and sticky and when I put him back on the mat and had a look, I realised that his BCG blister had burst (possibly when I took his nappy off which might explain that wail) and he was bleeding. So I rummaged around for our baby medical box and then rummaged in that for the plasters, and then broke a nail trying to open the plaster box.

Back to the changing table we went. And what did he do on the way? Wee-ed right down me of course.

And by then it was 9am.
It's a shame bibs ever have to get dirty

Enforced Silence #AtLeastOnMyPart

I also managed to bring back a case of tonsilitis with me from Brussels and have now spent the past 2 days holed up in bed. And of course it's right about now that Small Fry energy seems to have doubled and he's looking for something new to do...like every 2 seconds.

Weekend in Brussels #Left10YearsAgoNowBackWithABaby

"Let's go back to daddy in Paris". And with this little sentence I realised how lucky we are.
And equally, to have such amazing friends that host us so brilliantly. Thank you!

Paris in the Springtime #GetMyBoat

If it's mad dogs and Englishmen that are up for the noon-day sun, then I suppose it's stir-crazy Scotswomen that are up for the torrential rain.

The weather is really so bad that we take refuge in the laundrette...
needs must when you have nappies and sheets to dry.
The park is deserted...because most people are sensible.
Even the ducks, made for wet weather, are so fed up that all they do is nap.

French Service #SometimesTheyDeserveTheirReputation

French service is stereotypically known to be bad, rude..and not really service at all. In reality, I don't always find this to be the case, but today I seemed to find the rudest and most insolent staff.

It all started when I tried to return an item at a baby store with its receipt. "Not possible", said the sales assistant. Because I didn't buy the item in that particular store. "Yes but it's the same brand name". "Yes, but you have to go to the store you bought it in". "Why?" "Because we don't sell that item". "But the company does". "Yes, but not us. Madame, you have to go to the store you bought it in". Fine, even though it's stupid.

From there we got on a bus and crossed the river to the south of the 15th arrondisement. Totally.the.other.side.of.Paris. Also my old stomping ground. When I arrived in Paris - I remember it being a Wednesday - my lovely friend Kate kindly let me stay with her right in the centre of Paris. On the following Sunday at a BBQ, I met an Irish guy Lorcan who was looking for a new flatmate. And so I found myself living on the 6th floor of an apartment near metro Convention in the 15th, with a view of the Eiffel Tower. The impending arrival of my belongings that had been scattered in Scotland, Cambridge, London and Brussels, including an upright piano, eventually made me look for a larger place of my own after just 3 months. I ended up in the 11th arrondisement in the place I called home in Paris for 3 years.

Today, I crossed the street where I used to live, in search of Paris' Lost and Found office. Whatever you do, don't lose anything in Paris. Not only is the office miles and miles away from anywhere else useful, but you are likely to encounter Paris' finest forms of rudeness in the service sector. First hurdle: just trying to get in the building. In my case, the X-ray machine had kept my empty plastic water bottle which had been lying on top of my bag but rolled out while the bag was scanned. "Excuse me, the machine has kept my water bottle". She came over, stuck her hand in and pulled it out. "Thank you". "So why did you call me over?""Er, to tell you that my bottle was still in the machine and to ask you what I should do about it" "So it's ok for me to put my hand in but not you?" "Well I didn't know if I was allowed to put my hand in". And I didn't want you pulling that gun on me. "Right madam". Right yourself you horrible little woman.

My old flat
Apparently 700 articles are handed in daily to this office from the whole of Paris and well do I believe it after seeing the queues. A half-hour wait got me to the welcome desk - so that's before you've done anything or got any form or talked to anyone else. A 30 minute wait just to get to the welcome desk. From there they direct you to the appopriate form-filling station and eventually (1-2 hours later) to speak to someone who inputs your missing articles into their database and see if it finds a match.

I was spared all this, thankfully, as I did have ID in my stolen bag and therefore my name would be in the system. It was not, so the guy manning the welcome desk told me not to bother with taking anything further. Suited me fine as the sun was shining outside.

We went to the park. No expectations about service here.

Introducing Real Food #AKindOfBabyLedWeaning

It might not look like it but Small Fry ate pretty well...so well that he only woke once during the night. Time to stuff it in me thinks.

Feed me, feed me more:
- red pepper
- mashed potato
- banana
- orange

Er, rain check momma:
- broccoli
- salmon
- pasta
- boiled egg
- nectarine

Baby Einstein #GeniusOrVeryBadMother?

Baby Einstein is a multimedia company that produces DVDs and toys that explore lanugage, science, music, colour, numbers etc and made expressly for baby's learning in mind. I just thought I'd try it, and for a full 20 minutes, Small Fry was riveted. Either they work and I am growing a little genius, or it's a slippery slope to TV and consoles!

Playmat Capers #RollOverBeethoven

Recently, Small Fry found it a lot of fun to lie on his back on the playmat, eat the hanging down animals and kick the giraffe in the corner. Now, it's much  more fun to:
cuddle the giraffe to help him balance
and
roll over!

A Full House #NeedAHoliday

Having just seen all four grandparents AND one great-grandmother in little more than a week, it seemed only fair to make sure the other great-grandmother got a look-in. France obliged by giving us two public holidays in a row, and off we went to Nantes.
The four generations
We are finally home, which makes a grand total of 3 nights spent in our flat since 5 April, although home wasn't initially sweet - Small Fry picked up a cold in the frigid Parisian swimming pool just before our Nantes trip and despite the smell of Eucalytpus oil pervading the place, he struggled to sleep. Poor wee soul.

Social Whirl #SpreadingTheLove

While back home, we caught up with, well, practically everyone.

SF, chillin' out before his big 'meet n' greet'.
Lucky SF, he had BOTH sets of grandparents the SAME weekend.

And to think they were both just bumps...

Something For The Weekend #OmaTurns60

The reason we all returned to Scotland was for Oma's 60th birthday. And when I mean all returned, I really mean ALL....only 18 days after leaving Texas, we caught up with Mama B and little Joey who flew in for the weekend as a surprise.

How rude. Somebody better teach Small Fry some manners.
The 3 cousins
It was amazing to catch up with someone who knew me when I was Small Fry's age.

Dr Kelling, SF, Dr Kelling and the truly great aunt
Too many places and faces, eh ma boy?

Where it all began #NotLettingTheGrassGrow

Small Fry models Oma's Spring 2013 knitwear collection.

30 degrees last week. Feels about 3 degrees this week.
